The statewide college teachers’ strike, which has been on for nearly a week, is likely to intensify with teachers planning to hold a massive demonstration on Wednesday outside the Collectorate in Nashik, where a special cabinet is scheduled.
“With this, we plan to take to roads and hold demonstrations,” said Atul Bagul, president, Pune University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) on Monday.
No further dialogue has been scheduled between the teachers and the government. Around 50,000 college teachers from the state have joined the strike called by Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisations (MFUCTO).
According to a press statement issued by PUTA and MFUCTO, teachers have enlisted 32 demands, of which, only two points have been discussed as yet. The prime demand is implementation of Sixth Pay Commission (SPC) recommendations for college teachers. And the government has hinted at certain modifications in the composite scheme of the University Grants Commission. “However, there is no clarity in what these modifications would be,” said the press release.
